You Can Accomplish This Before Your Effing Head Explodes: Doodle Gift Wrap

Kids (and adults that are still in a state of arrested development) like to scribble.  Not that I have any first hand knowledge of arrested development. . .I’ve been told they like to scribble.

A few weeks back, we attended yet another, child’s birthday party.  Even though I have a son, I am at a complete loss when it comes to gifts for boys ages 7 and up.  I just can’t identify with Star Wars and Legos and Jesus Star Wars Legos.  THEY MAKE STAR WARS LEGOS?!

I know this child spends a great deal of time in the car.  So I found a pretty cool “Draw Your Own Comic” book. . .The illustrations were partially started and then there were instructions about how to finish ala “What is the Monster Chasing?”

Very clever indeed.  No more “Tell me what to draw” whining around from the kid.  This clever illustrator has Mom covered.

I also purchased some colored pencils for him.

So I had a book and colored pencils.  And Let’s face it, no matter how cool that book was, the kid was still going to look at it and think “Great, a book.”  So I wanted the presentation to be unique.

I was looking at the pencils and they were square instead of round. . .Which reminded me of chopsticks.  And the book was rectangular. . .kinda’ like a sushi tray. . .

So I covered the book in white craft paper.  Then I took a sharpie and drew pieces of sushi on the craft paper.  I gathered up all the pencils with two rubber bands, slid the bundle through a mini Slinky, and secured them to the left side of the package with double-sided tape.

Ta-da. . .Unique gift wrap.  And the recipient can color the gift wrap doodles anyway they please.

You can certainly do this for adults too. . .With just about any simple design or doodle you would like.  Paisley. . .a geometric design. . .a landscape that you could mock-up to be a “color by number.”  It can be as simple or as intricate as you wish. . .

If you can bear to part with it, your gift wrap is guaranteed to be a unique hit.

    • Thanks! I didn’t think about this until now, but it also eliminates the need for an expensive card (which will likely just get tossed aside anyway). We had to bail before the gifts were opened (imagine that?). However, I was told the little boy loved it. His Father told me “you are the best gift giver ever!” (A complete exaggeration but it made me smile).

    • You’re too kind! Genius would have been thinking up a universal excuse to never have to attend another kid’s birthday party. That’s mean huh? I adore our friends and their children. . .I just can’t get down with the kiddie parties (even if there is an open bar). LOL!

      • I hear you. That’s why it’s so glorious when they get to the age where the invites have a line on them that says: “Drop-offs okay.” THOSE are the golden ones 🙂
